Expert Guide: Understanding Color and Clarity in Lab-Grown Diamonds for a Brilliant Choice
Color Grading in Lab-Grown Diamonds
Both lab-grown and natural diamonds are graded for color using the GIA color grading system, which is considered the highest standard for diamond grading and ranges from D to Z. This scale measures how colorless the diamonds are. The closer a diamond is to being completely colorless, the higher the grade. Diamonds with noticeable tints of brown or yellow get a lower grade (Butcher, 2021). Some companies may use the IGI grading scale, which is also common but not held to the same strict standards as the GIA.
Transparency matters too! Even if two diamonds have the same color grade, the one that's more transparent—meaning it has fewer visible imperfections—will be more highly valued. For example, D color diamonds, which represent the highest grade on the GIA color scale, are not only completely colorless but also known for their exceptional clarity, making them appear crystal clear and more brilliant.
Clarity in Lab-Grown Diamonds
Just like color, clarity is key when evaluating both lab-grown and mined diamonds. They’re assessed for internal flaws, called inclusions, and external blemishes. Clarity is graded on the GIA scale, from Flawless (F) to Included (I3) ("GIA 4Cs clarity," n.d.).
The good news about lab-grown diamonds? They’re often created with fewer inclusions because they’re made in controlled environments.
Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, optically, and visually identical to natural diamonds. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), lab-grown diamonds must be laser-inscribed with "LG" to show they were created in a lab, otherwise they may be indistinguishable from mined natural diamonds.
Whether you’re opting for lab-grown or natural diamonds, the factors of color and clarity are equally important. With lab-grown diamonds, you’ll often find a higher quality option at a more affordable price—and the bonus of being eco-friendly and ethically sourced!
